The iPhone 15 series has hit stores and finally, Apple fans are getting the phones in their hands for the first time. And there’s a lot to explore, especially in the Pro models. From the new action button to the USB-C connector, the new A17 Pro chipset and the titanium frame, the new iPhone 15 Pro models offer many improvements over their predecessor. But one of the upgrades has also become a source of concern for some users. Some people notice temporary discoloration or discoloration on the Pro models after using it without a case. Although this caused temporary panic among netizens who posted online about the problem, Apple has now acknowledged the problem and also offered a solution.
Some iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max buyers have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to point out the fading issue. A said, “I would probably buy the 15 pro when buying an iPhone for the first time, but I’m afraid of this frame like in the photos, I saw the discoloration is it real or just a fingerprint”. Another said, “Is this iPhone 15 Pro discoloration real? It doesn’t look like stains or dirt to me.”
We also noticed this problem on our iPhone 15 Pro. But why is this happening?

iPhone 15 Pro models suffer from temporary discoloration
A report by 9to5Mac pointed out that the problem comes from WeIDirty or greasy hands on iPhone 15 Pro models, which may temporarily cause a discoloration issue on the exterior band of the smartphone.
Interestingly, the iPhone 15 Pro models with a titanium frame are not painted at all. Instead, they are treated with a PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating for their colorful finish. For those who don’t know, PVD coating is the process by which a solid material is vaporized under vacuum and deposited onto the surface of a part to give it the desired color. However, dirty or greasy hands can damage it. The problem was also noticed by some users on the Apple Watch Ultra, which also has a titanium body.
But if this problem concerns you and you may never be able to eliminate the discoloration, don’t worry. This is indeed temporary and can be repaired. In fact, Apple also recognized the problem and offered a solution.
Apple offers solution to fading problem
Apple update its “Clean Your iPhone” support page to post a notice saying: “For iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, oil from your skin may temporarily alter the color of the exterior band.”
It also offered an effective solution. The support page said: “Wiping your iPhone with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth will return it to its original appearance.” This solution worked for us. Additionally, using a holster completely eliminated the problem for us.
It remains to be seen whether Apple opts for a different process for coloring its titanium-bodied iPhones, because even if it’s temporary, the discoloration can make the device unappealing.
