Latest: Trump Shot at Pennsylvania Rally
Mr. Trump was shot in the right ear at a Pennsylvania campaign rally, where a bystander was killed and two others were critically injured. The attacker, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead.
Harris called the incident a “horrific and heinous criminal act” and welcomed the news that Mr. Trump had spoken with President Joe Biden afterwards.
President Trump is safe and well following an attempted assassination, which also resulted in injuries and the death of an innocent bystander. Many leaders condemned the political violence and expressed their concerns over the rising trend globally. Irish Prime Minister Harris called for reduced rhetoric and real leadership in the US, Europe, and Ireland. President Biden described the incident as “sick” and was grateful for Trump’s safety.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, appalled by the violence, sent his best wishes to Trump and his family, emphasizing that political violence has no place in society. DUP leader Gavin Robinson condemned the attack as a “sickening effort to disrupt democracy.” At the same time, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her shock and wished Trump a speedy recovery.
Other leaders, including Alliance Party leader Naomi Long and Ulster Unionist Party leader Doug Beattie, echoed similar sentiments, denouncing the attack and stressing that political violence undermines democracy. Traditional Unionist Voice leader Jim Allister highlighted the ongoing threat to democracy posed by such acts.
The incident occurred at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president was rushed off stage after a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire. Trump was slightly injured, and the gunman was shot dead. The FBI is investigating the case as an assassination attempt.
