Meta’s latest social media app, Threads, will likely soon gain support for the Trending Topics feature, with the new feature spotted in a screenshot accidentally posted by a Meta employee. Since Threads launched in July this year, users have requested a Trending Topics feature to help them find the most talked about topic on Meta’s Twitter/X rival.
However, soon after the launch of Threads, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, in an interaction with The Verge, had said that the aim of Threads was not to replace Twitter, but to create a “public square for communities on Instagram.
Mosseri also said: “Politics and current affairs are important, I don’t want to suggest otherwise. But my point is that, from a platform’s perspective, any additional engagement or revenue it might generate is not at all worth the scrutiny, negativity (let’s be honest) or integrity risks that accompany them. »
Mosseri’s comments led many users to conclude that Threads may never offer the trending topics feature, which has been widely used as a source of news, politics and outrage on Twitter.

The new trending topics feature was first spotted by app developer William Max thanks to a screenshot taken by an anonymous Meta employee who accidentally posted it on Threads. The new feature sorts topics numerically below the search bar, while also displaying the number of posts on each topic.
Notably, Threads had only revealed the keyword search feature in an update last month. However, when announcing the update via his Threads profile, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the Trending Topics feature. He wrote: “Get excited: search is coming to Thread… It’s deployed in most English- and Spanish-speaking countries today. More will be available soon.”
