DENVER — Operations at Denver International Airport were temporarily disrupted Friday afternoon when a passenger went through security with a gun.
The DIA said all trains and security checks were stopped and departures blocked between 1:40 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. after the passenger passed through the A Deck security checkpoint with what the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confirmed to be a firearm.
The TSA said checkpoint screening technology detected the weapon, but the wrong bag was flagged for further searching. This allowed the passenger to travel to the terminal area with her carry-on baggage, which contained the weapon.
According to the TSA, once they realized an incorrect bag had been flagged, they suspended screening operations while they worked with Denver police to conduct a precautionary screening. The agency said it worked with police to quickly track down the woman and recover the gun.
According to FlightAware, 460 flights were delayed and 14 flights were canceled as of 8:10 p.m. Friday.
“We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as they become available,” the DIA said on social media at 1:44 p.m.
The airport announced the resumption of operations at 2:09 p.m.
The TSA said Thursday it has intercepted 124 firearms at DIA since the start of the year. This is the sixth highest total in the country.
