The majority of American adults do not believe The benefits of artificial intelligence outweigh the risks, according to a new Mitre-Harris survey released Tuesday. From a report: 54% of 2,063 adults surveyed in a July Mitre-Harris poll said they were more concerned about the risks of AI than the potential benefits. At the same time, 39% of adults said they believe today’s AI technologies are safe and secure, down 9 points from the previous survey in November 2022. Operators AI and technology industry are considering new regulations and policy changes to secure their models and mitigate associated security and privacy risks.
The new survey data is among the first to highlight growing support for these regulatory efforts. “As the public has begun to benefit from new AI capabilities like ChatGPT, we have all watched as chatbots spread political misinformation and share dangerous medical advice,” said Douglas Robbins, vice president of the engineering and prototyping at the nonprofit security research and development company Miter, in a statement. “Strengthening existing government regulations and increasing public and private investment in ensuring AI can play a critical role in addressing these concerns,” he added.
