RDC 2023 began on September 8 at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California. The event brings together creators from around the world to connect with each other and learn about the exciting new features and products being introduced to the game. This year’s event, however, was abruptly shut down due to a known security risk.
Roblox sent out a tweet confirming the early cancellation of the conference’s remaining events, which read: “Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to cancel the conference. Roblox Innovation Award due to potential security issue. We are working with all relevant authorities and everyone is safe. We take security very seriously.” The tweet ended with the company expressing that this was not how they wanted the event to end.
The incident in question involved Roblox developer Mikhail Olson, also known as Simbuilder. Olson, also known for his game Roblox Vehicle Simulator, faces several charges, including “having a concealed firearm in a vehicle.” Other charges included possession of armor-piercing ammunition and a high-capacity magazine. According to San Francisco Sheriff’s Office records, Olson was taken into custody at 8:32 p.m. local time on September 9, 2023.
Event attendees were quick to post images and videos of Olson’s arrest on social media. A post from @DevArdwyck shows footage captured by @nin900500 of Olson being detained. Ardwyck said: “Well, that was something.”
Some reports suggest that Simbuilder was not invited to the event, but this has not yet been confirmed. It’s also unclear what led to the developer’s arrest, as he didn’t post anything on his social media before raising eyebrows.
THE DRC event was not without other controversies, as the company announced that it was considering players aged 17 and older forming real-life relationships from its in-game dating experience. Many found this worrying given that predators allegedly use the platform to interact with minor children.
