Pretty much what the word sounds like, microdosing involves taking around one-tenth the amount of a normal dose of a psychedelic.
Testimonials from microdosing regulars include better management of symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and even chronic pain. Others microdose to to optimise their quality of life.
Although scientific evidence on the benefits of microdosing is somewhat difficult to gather, the practice is believed to date back to the 1500s. Modern Western practices began in the 1960s and continued underground after psychedelics were banned in the 1960s and 1970s, The Washington Post reports.
James Fadiman 2011’s “The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide” was one of the first modern writings on microdosing. A few years later, a Rolling Stone article on LSD microdosing revealed that self-medication was commonplace among San Francisco tech startups.
But in reality, this has been going on for years. Steve Jobs would have informed the Department of Defense of his use of LSD in 1988. He attributed some of his creativity to psychedelics.

Benzinga interviewed someone who knows the world of high-achieving tech professionals well.
Lauren Mugglebee works with clients seeking personal growth and behavior modification. She says that traditional pharmaceutical medications used for improved focus or anxiety issues “keep you from really connecting with your body and your feelings.”
While integrating different modalities into his coaching, Mugglebee highlights the unique role of microdosing psychedelics, including psilocybin and LSD, in helping people move away from pharmaceuticals and pay closer attention to themselves.
This is a key issue because most senior executives in the field are addicted to intensity, which usually leads to a lack of thoughtfulness and a lack of deep thinking. “They are addicted to work. They are addicted to making money. They are addicted to being right. They’re addicted to autopilot so they can do what they need to do,” says Mugglebee.
A productive, achievement-driven culture is an outlook Mugglebee knows well, after 20 years working in the tech industry herself.
Microdosing psychedelics, she notes, won’t solve all problems. The process involves noticing what is happening around you without judgment. It also depends on where each person is in “their journey toward building their self-awareness, their ability to be present, to be in their body, and to conduct deep inquiry.”
Mugglebee also emphasizes the need for careful titration, which starts low and goes slow in order to find the optimal dose. It is a process that promotes self-awareness around the body and emotions and promotes consultation with a clinician towards a more tailored outcome.
His journey to microdose coaching began two and a half years ago under the guidance of Paul Austin, the “trainer of trainers”. Austin has been an active advocate for some time, starting underground and now openly through his Third Wave Community podcasts which feature guests such as major industry investors.
